Logging Daily Progress on Individual Tasks
Task-level daily logs let subcontractors and owners record work progress on specific tasks each day. Unlike the project-level daily log which captures site-wide conditions, task logs track hours, crew, and delays at the individual scope level.
Project Log vs. Task Log
- Project log — Records weather, site conditions, overall crew count, and general work completed across the entire project. Filled out by the project owner or site manager.
- Task log — Records hours worked, crew assigned, notes, and delays on a single task. Filled out by whoever is working on that task (typically a subcontractor).
Both log types appear together on the project daily log page so owners can see the full picture for any given day.
Adding a Log Entry
- Open a project and click on any task to open the edit panel.
- Scroll down to the Daily Log section and click to expand it.
- Fill in the date (defaults to today), hours worked, crew count, and any notes about work completed.
- Click Save Log Entry.
If you already logged for this task on the same date, your existing entry will be updated instead of creating a duplicate.
Logging a Task-Level Delay
If work on a specific task was delayed (not a site-wide weather delay), you can log the delay directly on the task:
- In the daily log form, click "Log a delay for this task".
- Choose Full day (8h), Half day (4h), or enter custom delay hours.
- Add a reason (e.g., "Material shortage", "Inspection hold").
- The form will show an estimated new end date based on the delay.
- Click Save Log Entry.
When you save a delay, BuildChart automatically shifts the task's end date by the delay amount and cascades the change to all dependent tasks, just like a weather delay.
What Owners See
Project owners see all task log entries from every team member. On the Project Daily Log page, a "Task Activity Today" section shows all task-level logs for the current day grouped by task name, giving a complete view of who did what.
Owners can also see log indicators on the Gantt chart. Hovering over a task bar shows total hours logged and the last log date. In the task list, a small calendar badge shows the number of log entries.
What Subcontractors See
Subcontractors can add and view log entries for tasks assigned to them. They can edit or delete their own entries but cannot modify entries from other team members.
Customers
Customers can see task log entries in read-only mode. They cannot add or delete entries.
