Using Project Templates

Building a schedule from scratch takes time. BuildChart includes five pre-built project templates based on real construction schedules so you can start with a solid foundation and customize from there. Each template comes with realistic tasks, durations, sections, and dependencies already configured.

Available Templates

BuildChart offers the following templates, each designed for a specific type of construction project:

  • New Home Construction — 32 tasks covering the full build cycle from site preparation and foundation through framing, mechanical rough-ins, interior finishes, landscaping, and final inspection.
  • Kitchen Remodel — 15 tasks spanning demolition, plumbing and electrical rough-in, cabinet installation, countertops, backsplash, appliance hookup, and final inspection.
  • Bathroom Remodel — 12 tasks for a compact remodel schedule including demolition, plumbing relocation, waterproofing, tile, vanity installation, and fixtures.
  • Room Addition — 20 tasks covering foundation work, framing, roofing tie-in, window and door installation, mechanical systems, drywall, and finish work.
  • Commercial Tenant Improvement — 25 tasks for a commercial build-out including plan review, demolition, partition walls, ceiling grid, MEP systems, flooring, painting, and certificate of occupancy.

How to Use a Template

  1. Click "New Project" on the dashboard to open the project creation flow.
  2. Choose "Start from Template" instead of creating a blank project.
  3. Select a template from the list. You will see a preview of the tasks and sections included.
  4. Review and customize the pre-populated tasks. Check that the task names, sections, and durations make sense for your specific project.
  5. Adjust dates to match your actual schedule. All template dates are relative and shift based on the project start date you set.

What Templates Include

Templates create real tasks in your project — they are not a separate system. Once a template is applied, the tasks behave exactly like tasks you create manually. Each template task includes:

  • An activity name describing the work
  • A section assignment (Planning, Execution, or Closeout)
  • A realistic duration in business days
  • Correct ordering and sort position within each section

All dates in a template are relative to the project start date. When you set your start date during project creation, BuildChart calculates every task date from that anchor point. If you change the project start date later, you can re-adjust individual tasks or use dependency cascading to shift the schedule.

Customizing After Creation

Templates are a starting point, not a constraint. After creating a project from a template, you have full control:

  • Add new tasks that are specific to your project scope
  • Edit any template task to change its name, duration, or section
  • Delete tasks that do not apply to your job
  • Reorder tasks using drag and drop or the up/down controls
  • Create parent/child hierarchies to group related tasks
  • Add dependencies between tasks to model the real sequence of work

💡 Tip

Templates are a starting point. Always review and adjust task durations for your specific project scope. A kitchen remodel in a 1960s home with outdated wiring will need more time for electrical than the template assumes.
